YOUR LETTERS-July/August 2009

Thank you for including the article “I Do, Now What?” by Maggie Knowles in the January/February 2009 issue.

As a mother, wife, and woman I truly enjoyed reading Knowles’s version of, to have a baby or not to have a baby, that is the question and then some.

This seemed like an unlikely topic for Port City Life but one that many Portlanders and Mainers alike can relate to. I found the article both entertaining and comforting. Ah, I am not the only woman wishing for a glass of wine and adult conversation, just like the good old days I like to call B.C. (before children)!

I wonder, would you consider having Knowles continue to write about her experiences and adventures as a thoughtful and creative local mom? Certainly, I am not the only mother or local reader who would love to find out how this business of motherhood pans out for her. What does she do to maintain her own sense of self? How will she cope when her child first has a melt down in the middle of the supermarket?

I hope that you consider my request. In conversation with friends (all mothers themselves) about the article they all seem to say the same thing, “Wow, that’s real.”

Thank you again.

I love your new editorial layout. The design of the cover and articles is striking—clean, strong, distinctive, yet warm and inviting.

When you see it on the rack, it really pops. The layout of the articles really draws the reader in. It’s quite dramatic really, with excellent use of “white space.”

I was so happy to get my new issue of Port City Life and see what a lovely job you did with the article I wrote. It was a an added treat that came on the heels of a great launch of our book, The Inspired Garden, and a good review in the Portland Press Herald. I read yesterday about the changes at Port City Life and hope they work out well for the crew who have been so great to work with on this article.

Many thanks for including a photo of Foursome on the Tee #1 and the accompanying nice article, “Art of Golf” in your May/June issue. Already I have received positive reaction to the presentation.

Loved the most recent issue [May/June] of Port City Life with features about so many people and issues near and dear to our hearts—Chef Wil Beriau’s celebration [“Scene At”], the Back Cove Yardscaping project [“Back Cove’s Budding Beauty” by Lindsay Knapp], and the photo essay on beach debris [“Back Page”].

We want to try to reach Robert Hyde, the photographer whose beach clean-up photo was on the back inside page of the magazine. His images really made him seem like a kindred spirit. We have picked up many of the same materials on our beach cleanups but never thought to arrange them so appealingly.
