On August 12, we sent the launch issue of Maine magazine off to press. The weeks leading up to that day were a perfect and distinctly Maine mash up of the cultural and the natural, the wild and the urbane. We ran back and forth, up and down, all over the state of Maine. Looking back, our calendars reveal many of the reasons we love living here–the contrasts and the balance of this great place on earth.

Wednesday July 29: Scouting for stories. Met with Annemarie Ahearn at Salt Water Farm in Lincolnville. Dinner at Francine in Camden. MH+D photographer Jonathan Laurence’s lecture for The Maine Media Workshops on a steamy summer evening upstairs in the Union Hall in Rockport.

Thursday July 30: In our Old Port offices at 75 Market Street, Portland, working and enjoying the sights and sounds of summer in Tommy’s Park.

Friday July 31: Family camp, Gulf Haggis, on the edge of Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness on the Appalachian Trail.

Saturday August 1: Climbed Maine’s highest peak, Mount Katahdin, via the Cathedral Trail across The Knife Edge. Going up and over, surprisingly not a problem. The trip down … another story. Still, one of the best days ever.

Sunday August 2: Owl’s Head at the CMCA’s 32nd Art Auction, watched Kaja Veilleux perform auctioneer’s magic. Brought home Dozier Bell’s Tank—a new prized possession.

Monday August 3: Breakfast at Home Kitchen Café, Rockland, with writer Laura Serino discussing the upcoming location feature on North Haven.

Monday August 3: Began an exploration of island life on Islesboro. Enjoyed incomparable views of Penobscot Bay and the Camden Hills. Fell in love with Artisan Books: rare books, new titles, coffee, and cigars in one transaction. Reminded to be patient and live in the moment, when the ferry operator said, “Well, the sun’s shining now” after I asked him how soon the boat would come.

Tuesday August 4: Biddeford, the North Dam Mill. Photo shoot with Irvin Serrano.

Wednesday August 5: Diverted to the mainland for mind-blowing meals at Natalie’s in Camden and Primo in Rockland.

Thursday August 6: Portland, dinner at Miyake. B.Y.O.B. + saké. Masa Miyake took care of the rest. Out of this world.

Friday August 7: Manned the MH+D booth with Steve Kelly, Associate Publisher, and our sales team, at the phenomenally successful Maine Boats, Homes, and Harbors Show. Hats off to John Hanson, Jr.

Saturday August 8: Enjoyed what was possibly the best burger ever at the Owl’s Head General Store. Sunday August 9: Prouts Neck, Black Point Inn with managing editor, Jon Levitt—crisp night, roaring fire, warm, old-school Maine lure.
