Words from our Subscribers

February 2011

We recently moved to Topsham.  Our daughter sent us a copy of your magazine as a little house warming present.  We were very impressed with the upscale quality of everything about it.  Now we have a subscription!

It's nice to see someone trying a more refreshing view of our great state and its people. While I respect their publications, the editors of Downeast and Yankee don't often seem true to the real 'us'. Best wishes on this. I am subscribing blindly after hearing about the motorcycle-riding friends, one of them is Mike Smith of East Coast Rovers of Rockland. Privately, I am an independent investment adviser here in Brunswick and live in Topsham. While print advertising generally is [not] productive for my profession, I might explore all that you have in that regard, so encourage your ad staff to E-Mail me, please.

We are a private physical therapy practice in Auburn. I just happened across your magazine through a Yahoo search for magazines. Maine magazine was a few titles down the page and caught my eye. We had been ordering the same old same old magazines for years through a discount company and this year decided to look for some new material on our own for our waiting room. I have to say that your posted testimonials is what sold me. There is a local company that produces the LA (Lewiston / Auburn) Magazine which is also a full color glossy magazine that we really enjoy. It's funny to learn that there is so much going on in your own backyard and don't even know it. So, I am very anxious to learn, from Maine, what else is going on in our great state.

I am in Amesbury, MA and love Maine, you might say I'm obsessed. I found your magazine at Stop and Shop and have been buying it for a couple of months. I think your nailing it now. Love the content where you focus on things to do, and food to eat, from a local's perspective. Also like the way you incorporate social media content into the magazine. Keep doing what you've been doing. Love it.

This fall I saw both your magazines and purchased newsstand copies. I immediately fell in love with your product. While my wife and I are not from Maine we have a very strong attachment to the state. I lived and worked in the 1980s in Millinocket Regional Hospital as a Physician Assistant. We lived in both Millinocket and then Orono at that time. After completing my Medical school we moved to North Yarmouth where we lived for several years while I worked at CMMC and St Mary's Regional Med Center in Lewiston Auburn. My In-laws still live in Durham, and one of ours sons was born in Maine Med.  In fact we are "Mainers In Exile". We relocated to Philadelphia for an incredible job in 2007. I work at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. We have had and continue to have a very large number of cancer patients from Maine. Folks from Fort Kent, Presque Isle, Boothbay, Houlton, Wilton, and many other areas. In fact, I think I have managed as many or more patients from Maine with cancer in the last three years while at CTCA in Philadelphia as I did during my years in Lewiston/Auburn. My centers waiting room is now stocked with your two Journals among the usual office reading material.  My patients from Maine truly enjoy it, particularly when away from the state for awhile.  The folks from "away" love seeing the state, reading about the state and it takes their mind off their heavy thoughts.  I truly love "giving some of Maine" to these incredible people. For now, I will enjoy talking with my Maine patients and hearing the interest that those from "away" have in the Great State of Maine, and glancing at the your Journals when time permits.

Thanks for your work on this beautiful magazine! I first saw Maine magazine at Whole Foods in Portland a couple of years ago, and I bought a copy to browse.  I was impressed by the beauty of the photography, the engaging writing and unusual features such as featured poems or works of art by Maine poets and artists. Last Christmas I bought a subscription for my parents, who live in Colorado but have a summer place in Bass Harbor.  Whenever I visited them, I always read Maine from cover to cover, so it seemed time to get my own subscription! We live in Massachusetts, but spend as much time in Maine as possible, and Maine magazine captures what we love about this beautiful place. Please keep featuring Maine artists and poets.  I also liked the brief fashion features in a few issues last winter. Many thanks!

We have been "Sugarloafers" for over 10 years. Last year I started buying your mag and loved it. A neighbor from Sugarloaf forwarded me your article "48 Hours in Carrabassett" which I forwarded to a dozen or more people. I saw your "subscribe" offer on the right margin and thought now is a good time. We are looking forward to getting the mag when we are in MA and dreaming of Maine.

I went to art school in Portland back in the mid-90's. I've been in Austin for 15 years now, but I get the chance to take my family back to Peaks every August to get out of the Texas heat. That is where I came across your magazine. I thought it to be beautiful but also informative, a few friends (Joe Kievett, Scot Nash, Tom Chappell) were featured, which made it delightful to read. Keep up the good work and we look forward to getting it at the house. We are also interested in attending events and getting to know more locals... Maine and Texas are very similar in a lot of ways and I think we would have fun.

I'm originally from Maine.  I still have a home in Allagash, so I'm back and forth between ME and MI a couple of times each year.  A cousin in Portsmouth recently gave us several copies of your magazine and we quite enjoyed them. The subscription is for NY friends who were with me at UMO many years ago.  They dearly love Maine, so I'm sure they'll enjoy it as well.

My Mother lives at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport and my husband and I own property at Biddeford Pool although we live off the grid here in New Boston, New Hampshire.  Our ties to Maine are strong.  We often pick up and head to Portland for a weekend, especially in the “off months” when tourist traffic is at a minimum and enjoy picking a special new restaurant to explore.  Running and walking the Marginal Way Path is a great way to work off that food the next morning, never having to get back in the car once you park it at your hotel! I like the poetry, short stories, reviews and people highlighted, especially of your writers in Jan/Feb issue.  It is also delightful to see how the magazine includes the entire geography of the state of Maine and not just the coastline.  The included clients in your advertising are also fresh and different, it makes me want to plan a trip to the Carrabassett Valley to ski; although we have some of the best skiing right here outside my door in NH! The FEEL of the publication is also exotic and makes it awesome and exciting to sit down and look at the art, graphics and photos.
Looking forward to getting my first in the mail in MARCH!

Our son is in Afghanistan and loves receiving your Maine Magazine. I send him a goodie box once a month and when your magazine comes out it is always included. He loves your articles, as we all do, and it makes him feel like home. He will return home in August of 2011. Thank you for a beautiful publication and continued success.

I didn't seriously consider moving back to Maine until I realized through this magazine how much is happening there in arts, entertainment, and, most importantly, food! After spending the past seven years in the DC area, I am thrilled to be moving back to my home state at the end of January. I can't say I would be making this huge change if it hadn't been for Maine introducing me to a cooler, more diverse, more progressive place than I left behind after college.

I have been picking up Maine on the way up to our seasonal place on Pemaquid Point (where my wife has been going for 50 years), or to visit my parents in Alna, and finally decided that it would make more sense to subscribe. I usually pick it up at the Whole Foods in Portland or at the Hannaford store in Damariscotta, and love the articles about food and travel that identify hidden gems throughout Maine. The issues that we leave around our cottage in Maine are well-read by our guests, so you can assure your artists, authors and advertisers that many eyes are seeing your product. I must say that I have never purchased Maine Home + Design, but the combination subscription price was too good to pass by. Best of luck with continued success - I look forward to receiving our first issue in the mail, and will pick up the November issue on my way up to Maine this evening.

I learned of your magazine through Twitter.  I've spent my summers in Maine for the last thirty years and follow a lot of Maine restaurants on Twitter (mostly to be reminded of Maine).  Andrew Knowlton from Bon Appetit was especially complimentary of the magazine and tweeted about and that's how I found you! I'm looking forward to my first issue!

I've known about the Maine magazines since the first print, most likely from social media like Twitter. I follow on Facebook/Twitter, check out the websites, and read an issue every now and then. I finally decided to get my own subscription so I didn't have to borrow from a friend.

I think I first stumbled on Maine in my hotel room at the Hilton Garden Inn on Commercial Street.  My wife and I travel to Maine a few times a year (we both went to Bates College) and after relying on my hotel to provide an occasional copy of the magazine I decided to finally spring for a subscription. Love the magazine--well layed-out, good coverage of new restaurants, creative design (I particularly liked the mention of Alewives Fabrics--we found our way there last Friday on our way down from Southwest Harbor).  I get Down East magazine as well, which I also like, but is very different and skewed towards an older audience, more "conservative" audience.  Maine is more reflective of a newer, more urban, hipper Maine.

We were attracted to the magazine by its clean design and great content. I was a practicing Architect, my wife a graphic designer and one our daughters, until recently, an Assistant Editor at Conde Nast Traveler, so we're pretty familiar with design, writing and the publishing world.  We appreciate the quality of the stock, the printing and overall readability of the magazine. We enjoy the fact that pieces are about interesting people, places and things in and around Maine and more "in depth" than we typically get these days.  We look forward to receiving your magazine on a regular basis now that we've subscribed.

I picked up a copy in the local Hannaford Store one day last summer and thought it was awesome.  There are so many great things going on in Maine that most people don't realize.  Living in Washington County, people really think nothing happens here, but I am still surprised at the things I learn and hear about! I love to read about different music venues, interesting restaurants, events and the access to the wonderful environment we enjoy in Maine. Good luck with continuing growth in your publication.........we love it!

My wife and I have a summer home in Northeast Harbor.  My wife’s family has been on MDI, first in Bar Harbor, then in Northeast Harbor, for 80 or more years.  They were actually burned out of Bar Harbor (Strawberry Hill) during the massive fire that ravaged the island in the late 1940s.  My wife and I also have summer camp roots in western Maine – she at Camp Wyonegonic in Denmark; I at Camp Winona in Bridgton.  When our son begins attending Winona either next summer or in 2012, he’ll be a 4th generation camper.  So, despite our San Diego address, we have a lot of Maine in our blood and return every summer. We discovered your magazine this past July and love it.  Can’t wait to keep up with our second ‘home state’ all year when it arrives monthly!
