Flowers Overlooking Rocks and Ocean

Feeding the Soul, #99

Today on the Dr. Lisa Radio Hour, we speak with novelist Peter Behrens, whose books The Law of Dreams and The O’Briens describe the journeys taken by individuals whose families were impacted by the Irish famines of the last century.

We also discuss journeys taken by the staff of Maine magazine, over the course of “48Hours,” with Maine magazine and Maine Home+Design editor-in-chief Susan Grisanti.

What is that you are hungering for, and how can you feed your soul?

We hope this show will give you food for thought.

Peter Behrens

Peter Behrens’ first novel, The Law of Dreams, won the Governor General’s Award, Canada’s top book prize, in 2006. Kevin Baker in the New York Times Book Review called it “Absorbing, unsparing and beautifully written…a masterly novel” and the Irish Sunday Independent said “. . . it is one of those rare books that comes along from time to time that makes you feel that you are in the presence of greatness.” Behrens’ second novel The O’Briens (Pantheon) “is a major accomplishment” said the New York Times Book Review. Born in Montreal, Behrens was educated at Concordia and McGill Universities and held a Stegner Fellowship at Stanford. He worked as a screenwriter in Los Angeles, lives in Maine and Texas, and teaches at Colorado College. In 2012-13 he was Writer-in-Residence at The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study. Travelling Light, a collection of his short stories, will be published by House of Anansi in May 2013.

Susan Grisanti

Susan Grisanti

Originally from Los Angeles, Susan Grisanti moved to Maine 14 years ago and has found much to love about this extraordinary corner of the country. Through her work as editor-in-chief of Maine Home+Design and Maine magazines, as well as The Brand Company and Art Collector Maine, Susan has found inspiration in the state’s creative communities and has developed a strong passion for Maine contemporary art. Seeking out the state’s most talented artists, craftsmen, entrepreneurs, and other innovators has proven inspiring: “Artists…present new ways of seeing and thinking beyond rigid parameters—holding so many mirrors up to our culture, and ourselves,” writes Susan in the April 2013 issue of Maine Home+Design. “And through their expression, these artists give us permission to play, experiment, and create something for ourselves—from within ourselves.” For a mother of three, the task of playing, experimenting, and creating is endless. And with Maine for a playground it’s pretty fun, too.
