PORTLAND, Maine—The Maine Outdoor Film Festival (MOFF) has released its 2021 lineup of films that will be screened in Portland from July 29 to August 8. The festival will showcase more than 60 movies, covering topics such as nature, sports, conservation, and adventure, all underlined by profound themes and breathtaking cinematography. 

Screenings will be held July 29–August 1 and August 5–8 on the Eastern Promenade, where viewers are encouraged to bring their own camp chairs and blankets for a movie night under the stars. Outside food and beverages are welcome and encouraged. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and films begin at 8 p.m. No pets are allowed, per city park rules. Additional showings will be held at Urban Farm Fermentory on Monday, August 2 and Tuesday, August 3, and at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute on Wednesday, August 4. Tickets cost $15 for each night, or attendees can purchase a MOFF Gold Pass for $110 to access all screenings.

All screenings will follow prevailing safety guidelines, including crowd limits, social distancing, and face mask recommendations. For those unable to attend the festival in person, MOFF’s virtual platform will be showing the films as well. 

Over a third of the movies selected for the 2021 season were made by Maine filmmakers. The Long Coast, a feature-length film by Ian Cheney, takes a look at the effects of overfishing, aquaculture, and warming waters on Maine’s fishing industry and the people whose livelihoods are tied to it. Dirtbags by E.C. Brego focuses on maker and founder of Oterra Designs, Erin O’Toole, whose signature chalk bags can withstand even the coldest winter day of rock climbing. Schoolies by Camden Spear follows three female anglers who are tying flies and throwing lines while they work their way through med school. 

All proceeds from this year’s festival will benefit nonprofit Teens to Trails. Tickets can be purchased at maineoutdoorfilmfestival.com.
