Talk about a Maine winter this week! Has anyone else added several blankets to their bed to stay warm? What do you do to beat the cold when it gets down into the single digits? We personally like to lean into hygge activities, like curling up next to the wood stove with a good book and a warm drink. However, if we have to venture out, thick woolen layers are a must have. Here’s our roundup for this weekend in Maine: 

Something to Do: 

If cold temperatures can’t sway you from wintry activities, then it’s time to bundle up and strap on skis. This Sunday, Carter’s XC Ski Center in Bethel is holding a Wooden Ski Day in honor of Nordic skiing’s heritage. Dress up in your best retro gear for a chance to win a prize, and any skier who brings old school wooden skis will be given a free trail pass!

Somewhere to Go:

Can’t get enough of Nordic skiing? You’re in luck! Last week Oxbow Beer Garden in Oxford opened its trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing! Spend a few hours out in the woods and stop by the warming hut, and then head back to the brewery for some pizza and beer as an aprés-ski treat.   

When: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Something to Watch: 

If braving the cold doesn’t appeal to you, indulge in a little culture this weekend by catching a performance of the Metropolitan Opera’s rendition of the Greek tragedy Eurydice, screened at the Collins Center for the Arts in Orono. This 21st-century take on the classic myth frames the story from the eponymous heroine’s point of view as Orpheus travels to rescue her from the underworld. Please note that masks are required during the entirety of the show, and viewers are asked to distance throughout the theater.

Something to Drink: 

Need something a little stronger to keep the chill out of your bones? Learn to make spiked coffee and cocoa at the Burleigh in Kennebunkport! The cocktail class will include two sample drinks, light snacks, and recipe cards to take with you, so that you can replicate the drinks all winter long for friends and family.

Something to Look Forward to: 

After opening in late November, Village Handcraft in Wiscasset is now offering classes to spread the love of making. Mark your calendars for a broom-making class next Saturday, in which participants will learn how to make two styles of hand brooms out of broom corn and Maine-made thread. Start practicing your knots!
