n 1922, famed American illustrator Newell Convers (N.C.) Wyeth was commissioned to illustrate a new edition of Brander Matthews’ Poems of American Patriotism, a compilation of poems by various American authors first published in 1882. Matthews’ book was what he described as a “history of America as told by her poets,” containing “a collection of old Favorites.”
Maine’s premier smart growth conference offers inspiration, resources and networking opportunities and this year we’ve created a program coupling national leaders with Maine successes, gubernatorial candidates and Maine’s first Smart Growth Awards. Plenary and breakout sessions addressing Maine’s rural economy are followed by Bangor Experience tours and workshops throughout our host city. On Friday, October 12th, Spurwink will celebrate and honor those who have shown a commitment to Spurwink’s mission – going the distance for those in need – at the 32nd annual Humanitarian Awards. This year, our focus will be on the work being done in by Spurwink’s statewide Outpatient and Community Services, including case management, outpatient therapy, public school counseling, foster care placement, therapeutic care for refugee and immigrant children and families, and more.
Every three-five mile Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor breast cancer survivors, and raise awareness about steps we can take to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

A Maine tradition since 2003, the Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival transforms the streets of Freeport and L.L. Bean Campus into a sea of orange. Join us as we light nearly 10,000 jack-o-lanterns around Freeport.
As always we have quite the schedule of activities and family fun planned – including live music, children’s activities, a costume parade, and family pumpkin carving (no purchase necessary).
