Emily & Tyler

Emily and Tyler had their first date in Camden in May 2015, near where Emily was living in Belfast. Tyler was stationed in Portland with the U.S. Coast Guard, so the couple saw each other on weekends for the first several months of their relationship. On Valentine’s Day 2016, they placed a lock on the Love Locks fence along the Portland waterfront. To celebrate their one-year anniversary, they had dinner at a Portland restaurant, and afterward walked over to visit their lock. As a passing stranger offered to take their photo, Tyler got down on one knee and proposed. He also managed to surprise his bride at the wedding reception, where he sang “Your Daddy’s Boots” by Dustin Lynch, the song Emily had chosen for her dance with her dad. “It was an incredible feeling to be so surprised on a day I had planned every detail of,” she says.

A fifth-generation native of Islesboro, Emily knew the island was the
ideal location for the wedding. She and Tyler were married at Christ Church Dark Harbor, where she was baptized and where her parents were married. “Islesboro shaped so much of me, and I couldn’t possibly imagine marrying Tyler anywhere else.”

RED, WHITE, BLUE, AND BEACH

MEN’S ATTIRE: Emily and Tyler chose some of their decorative elements based on their love of the American flag.
Tyler gifted his groomsmen with American flag socks that they wore with their blue suits, white shirts, and blue striped ties. Tyler, who also wore the socks, sported an American flag tie bar too.

TABLE SETTINGS: A collection of elements provided color and a personal touch to the white-draped tables. Hurricane vases with candles and mussel shells collected on Islesboro’s beaches, small pots with succulents grown by a family friend, and glass candlesticks with dahlia blooms—also grown for the occasion by a friend—were all arranged on round blue placemats made by Tyler’s mom. The place cards were beach stones.

HORS D’OEUVRES: While a caterer handled much of the menu, Tyler’s mom and her best friend, Deb, made all of the hors d’oeuvres. “They were a sampling of some of Tyler’s and my favorite foods, and they were a big hit with our guests,” says Emily.
