The Maine Weekender, January 28—30

As January comes to a close, we find ourselves preparing in full Mainer fashion for the big winter storm rolling in this weekend: heading to the grocery store to stock up on bread and milk, making sure the flashlights have fresh batteries, stocking the woodbox to minimize trips outside, and pulling out the stash of emergency candles. Whether you’re frantically prepping for the storm or eagerly planning for full winter wonderland adventures, here’s our roundup for this weekend in Maine:

Something to Do:

With the nor’easter on the horizon, we can’t help but have skiing on the mind. Are you ready to hit the slopes? From now until March 25, take advantage of discounted tickets at Black Mountain on Thursdays and Fridays, as a part of L.L.Bean’s Winter Across Maine! Beat the storm this week and take advantage of a $25 lift ticket tomorrow, with the added bonus of free cross-country skiing and snowshoeing if you’re feeling extra adventurous.

When: Thursdays and Fridays until March 25
Where: 39 Glover Rd., Rumford

Somewhere to Go:

Just because the temperature has been dipping into the negatives, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fresh produce. This Saturday, make your way to Fort Andross in Brunswick for the Brunswick Winter Market! Browse through the booths of local vendors and farmers, such as Winter Hill Farm, North Spore, and Spring Day Creamery, and add some variety back into your fridge.

When: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday
Where: 14 Maine St., Brunswick

Something to Eat:

Ready for a date night? You’re in luck; Regards, a restaurant from chef Neil Zabriskie, Cameron Lewin, and Kimberly Lund, is opening this Saturday! Drawing from the owners’ collective experience living and working in Los Angeles, New York, and Maine, the menu will highlight ingredients from local farmers, such as Spanish mackerel with smoked cream emulsion, aji limo, and fennel sofrito. Make your reservations now!

When: 5 p.m. Saturday
Where: 547 Congress St., Portland

Something to Watch:

If the past few weeks of extreme cold weather have put you in an ice skating mood, make your way to the Rink at Thompson’s Point in Portland this Saturday to watch Winter Party on Ice, a performance by Ice Dance International! Featuring U.S. figure skating champion Alissa Czisny and Ice Dance International company members, the show will give you plenty of inspiration to keep practicing your crossovers and hockey stops.

When: 3 p.m. Saturday
Where: 10 Thompson’s Point Dr., Portland

Something to Put on Your Radar:

Have you made your Valentine’s plans for that special someone yet? Flowers always go a long way. This year, plan ahead and order a bouquet from CLO Floral in Portland! Choose from a variety of arrangements or, if you’re feeling extra fancy, you can order “The Deluxe Love Bundle,” which includes a bouquet, along with four jam-filled, heart-shaped cookies and a “Date Night” print from local artist Anastasia Inciardi.

When: Sunday, February 13 and Monday, February 14
Where: Coveside Coffee and West End, Portland
