William Crosby’s Coastline

2012, acrylic on stretched canvas, 24” x 24”

“Coastline is a painting inspired by kayaking the Maine coastal waters of rocks, marshes, inlets, wooded shores, and big skies. Brush strokes are bold and full of movement in a strong composition. Some areas are opaque layers juxtaposed against transparent washes or neutral undeveloped areas. In this painting, as in many of my paintings, the natural landscape of sky, earth, and water becomes a retreat for life and spirit. Wilderness is both a physical place and a state of mind and spirit. Often my work can be considered as an abstract impression of the landscape. Certainly I think of it as an emotional interpretative response to the natural landscape for myself and the viewer.'”
